Today we discussed Emotions. Emotions would have been covered in Lesson 6 but we had missed that so we decided to revive it today. The girl's started with an exercise where they had a partner and they had to sit, lock arms and then try and stand with out touching the floor or unlinking arms. Everyone was able to accomplish this. We then made the groups bigger and bigger and one group even had a helping hand by Mr Greene. After the activity the girls said they enjoyed this and they had emotions like frustration and excitement.
Before our laps today the girls had to fill out 3 index cards with three different emotions. They then started their laps with 1 of their cards and if this was an emotion that they felt comfortable with such as Happy or Elated they would do their laps counter clockwise but if they chose an emotion that made them feel uncomfortable they had to then run clockwise. The girls had a lot of conversations about emotions and even had to walk or run with a new partner because their close friend might have had to go in the opposite direction. Everyone seemed to enjoy this activity as well. Thank you to the parents that were able to swing by and help out today we so appreciate that all of you could come and join us it truly shows the girls your support of this program.

Lesson 9 was about making friendships and how making friends is not something that comes automatically how we need to work on it and one way was by asking questions. The girls first had to guess what their partners animal was they wrote on a index card. Some of the girls had some pretty tough ones like Armadillo and Komodo dragon. They had fun figuring out what their partner had come up with. They also ran with everyone from our team. The girls came up with 2 open ended questions like What's your favorite car? or Where have you traveled? they then had to ask someone to run with them and then ask them their question. When they both had answers they would return to the starting line grab a new question and a new partner. The girls said they liked getting to know their teammates a bit better.
We talked a little about our community outreach project and how we were approached by the Moretown GOTR and they would love to team up this year at the ART Fair to do the bake sale and face painting. They suggested we raise money for the Community Fund. The girls were also given their envelopes to collect money for scholarships. We spoke about not approaching strangers for money and also to go to homes with parents. There is no obligation at all to collect. I will be sending a sign up genius very soon for the ART fair items we will need and also I am looking for people who may be sewing inclined. The girls would like to make fox ears to wear the day of the race to show support to our school. If anyone has suggestions I am all ears!!!!! This Lesson covered how to Stop and take a Breathrrr. When we need to make a decision . . .
First we STOP. Our lives are so busy, and we frequently rush right through the day without stopping. The first step in making intentional decisions is recognizing that it can be very important to pause for a moment before moving forward. Then we BREATHE. Not one shallow breath, but several deep breaths. Without realizing it many people inadvertently hold their breath or breathe very shallowly. Taking deep breaths helps us slow down. Then we THINK . . . about the situation and brainstorm different ways we can respond. What are my options? What is important to me in this situation? What do I want the outcome to be? Then we RESPOND, and afterward we REVIEW our response to decide if we would do things differently next time. Going through this process helps us make intentional and thoughtful decisions, which is why it is a skill we practice with the girls in our program. Practice is a key concept here because it is not enough to try this only one time. Girls need to practice intentional decision making over and over in different situations so that they develop the confidence needed to use this skill in other settings. At Girls on the Run our girls practice it with bullying scenarios, gossiping scenarios and even when they think about the qualities of a good friend. We had to skip this lesson due to illness and other family obligations.
During today's lesson we talked about Balance and how we should try to keep balance in our lives. The girl's did an activity that challenged them to find balance with their bodies and also their minds by running and answering questions about their brain, physical health, emotions, activities and people who help keep their lives in balance. |
